Year 7

This half term, our year 7 AC students have been working on a ‘City Life’ unit of work.  They have been working on extending their vocabulary related to:

  • Places in town
  • Transport
  • Extreme adjectives
  • Collocations

In our Language Focus lessons, students have focussed on the Past simple tense:

  • The verb to be was/were
  • Regular and irregular verbs in past simple affirmative and negative sentences, questions and short answers

Students have been learning about ancient Rome, reading articles about Pompeii and learning about volcanoes.

They have been discussing the advantages, disadvantages of ‘City Life’, and worked to produce an opinion essay on this topic.  Students have also researched and presented a city of their choice to the class, where they are developing their presentation skills.

Year 7s are currently researching Peterborough:

  • Size and Location
  • Things to do and places to visit
  • History and Interesting facts

Students will use their research to write an informal email to a friend describing the city they live in.  They will focus on:  informal language, the structure of an email, paragraphs,  topic sentences and extending their ideas.

In our PSHE lessons, year 7s have been learning about their bodies and keeping themselves healthy and safe.

Students have also visited the library, where they have taken out books to read at home. Students should be reading each day at home to prepare for a book review/presentation task at the start of next term.

Year 8

This half term, our year 8 AC students have been working on a ‘Life Choices’ unit of work.  They have been extending their vocabulary related to:

  • Life events/choices
  • Containers and materials
  • Phrasal verbs

In our Language Focus lessons, students have focused on future tenses:

  • be going to
  • be going to and will
  • present continuous for future

Year 8s have also been reading articles about life events and choices.  They have produced an opinion essay about the advantages and disadvantages of Home Education, focussing on: set phrases used in essays, linking words/phrases, paragraphing and extending ideas. 

Our students have also been studying the structure of biographies and have researched and written a biography on a famous person of their choice. They have worked hard in these lessons to follow a process approach to writing, where they are becoming more independent in researching, drafting,  self/peer correcting, redrafting and producing a final piece of writing for display. Our students extended this work into a presentation and presented a famous person to the class, where they are now extending their presentation skills.

In our PSHE lessons, year 8s have been following an ‘Active Citizenship’ unit of work.  They have been learning about the effects of plastic pollution and discussed the advantages/disadvantages of the everyday use of plastic.  Students reviewed formal letter writing and wrote a formal letter to our local MP, Mr Paul Bristow, outlining their concerns about plastic pollution and suggesting their ideas on how to reduce plastic consumption.

Students have also visited the library, where they have taken out books to read at home. Students should be reading each day at home to prepare for a book review/presentation task at the start of next term

Year 9

This half term, our year 9 AC students have been working on a ‘Fears and Superstitions’ unit of work.  They have been focusing on extending their vocabulary related to:

  • Fears and phobias
  • Superstitions
  • Adjectives ending in ‘ing’ and ‘ed’
  • Opposites

In our Language Focus lessons, students have been extending their understanding of the future tense:

  • be going to
  • be going to and will
  • present continuous for future

They have also looked at different quantifiers (much, many, a few, a little, enough).

As part of this topic, students have read articles about fears/phobias and how these can be overcome. They have also looked at traditional and modern-day superstitions and discussed cultural differences in these beliefs.

Additionally, students have been studying the structure and language features of newspaper articles. In recent lessons, they have started composing an article about fears and superstitions, discussing common examples, as well as their own personal beliefs.

In our PSHE lessons, year 9s have been learning about the effects of drugs and alcohol. They have also been analysing the role of peer pressure.

Once a week, students have been using ‘Bedrock Learning’ via computer, to broaden their English vocabulary. Students should continue to regularly access this programme, ideally on a daily basis.

Students have visited the library on several occasions this term, where they have taken out books to read at home. Students should be reading each day at home to prepare for a book review/presentation task at the start of next term.

Year 10

 

Year 10 Literacy

Year 10 Literacy are working on developing their use of English language and understanding of grammar in context. Students have worked on an Education unit, where they have written formal letters and emails and linked ideas expressing contrast.   Students have also worked on a Technology unit of work, where they are developing their reading skills, interpreting diagrams and pictures and writing a description of a device.

 

Literacy lessons also supports GCSE English preparation and students have been  working on a range of classics and analysing and comparing poems form AQA Anthology of Poems: Love and Relationships.

 

Students should continue practising the use of PEEL paragraphs using the strategies worked on in lessons when analysing and comparing texts.

Students are encouraged to review and do online activities to master the skills covered in lessons.

 

Students are advised to go on Show My Homework (SMHW) to complete the activities uploaded which include:

  • Online activities and games

Year 10 ESOL

This year, Year 10 ESOL are preparing for Cambridge KEY for Schools and Preliminary for Schools qualifications. They have been working on using tenses correctly and applying complex grammar accurately. The topics they have worked on have enabled them to gain vocabulary required for their exams related to clothes, sports (KEY), films and story writing (Preliminary). In order to support students, they should continue practising the use of grammar, the vocabulary worked in lessons and doing exam practice.

Students are encouraged to review and do online activities to master the skills worked in lessons. Students are advised to go on Show My Homework (SMHW) to complete the activities uploaded which include:

Year 11Literacy

This year, Year 11 Literacy are working on developing their use of English language and understanding of grammar in context. They have been preparing for their GCSEs working on a range of classics such us Macbeth, An Inspector Calls and analysing and comparing poems from AQA Anthology of Poems: Power and Conflict. The topics and texts they have worked on have enabled them to gain better understanding of GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature.

In order to support students, they should continue to practice structuring paragraphs using the strategies worked in lessons when analysing and comparing texts.
